Cypriot Livestock Farmers Demand End to Culling of Healthy Animals

Cypriot livestock farmers are scheduled to meet with President Nikos Christodoulides today to express their strong opposition to the ongoing culling of healthy animals as part of the effort to combat foot-and-mouth disease. They are demanding an immediate end to this practice and the adoption of a universal vaccination program for all animals. Additionally, they will request an audit by the European Union regarding the management of funds allocated for the control of zoonotic diseases in the occupied territories. The meeting will include representatives from various livestock sectors, such as cattle, goat, sheep, pig farmers, cheesemakers, as well as representatives from the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association and agricultural organizations. The meeting follows farmer mobilizations and statements from their representatives condemning the culling of animals. The General Secretary of Panagrotikos, Tasos Yapanis, stated that their main demand is the immediate cessation of animal killings, describing them as "murders." He emphasizes the need to change the policy being followed to address foot-and-mouth disease. Complications also arose yesterday during the culling process, as farmers obstructed the work of the Veterinary Services. This situation necessitates the redesign of the teams operating in the field, highlighting the tension and resistance faced by authorities in implementing the measures.
