EU Seeks Cooperation with US on Tariffs, Aims to De-escalate

The European Commission stated that it wants to cooperate with the United States and avoid escalating the situation regarding the US President's announcement of tariffs. The goal is to avoid tariffs altogether, as they would harm businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. The Commission spokesperson referred to a statement by President Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized the EU's commitment to the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark, as well as the protection of the EU's economic and security interests. In the event of tariffs being imposed, the EU has tools to respond, including reviving a package of counter-tariff measures worth €93 billion. This package had been prepared since the spring of 2025, but its suspension was agreed in July after a trade agreement with the US. The suspension expires on February 6th, and if not renewed, the tariffs will automatically come into effect the next day. The use of the “Trade Bazooka” - Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI) is also being considered, with France appearing as its main supporter. However, there is currently no broad consensus on the use of this instrument.
