Commission on Iran: “Ready to Propose New, Stricter Sanctions After Violent Crackdown on Protests”

The European Commission condemns the violent crackdown on protests in Iran and expresses its solidarity with the demonstrators. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for the immediate release of all imprisoned protesters and the restoration of internet access. The Commission states it is ready to propose new, stricter sanctions against Iran, which will supplement the existing ones. The decision to impose sanctions rests with the member states and requires unanimous agreement. Discussions are also underway regarding the possible inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the EU's list of terrorist organizations, which also requires unanimity.
