State Aid for Restoration of Abandoned Vineyards

Stella Michaelidou, Controller of State Aid, announced a new state aid measure aimed at restoring abandoned vineyards and other agricultural land. The purpose of the measure is to reduce the risk of wildfires, improve the sustainability of agricultural holdings, protect the environment, and preserve cultural heritage. The implementation will be carried out by the Department of Agriculture and the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation. The aid will be provided in the form of direct grants for various works, such as uprooting, cleaning, soil analysis, purchase of planting material and installation of supports. In addition, there will be aid for the mechanical control of weeds and the maintenance of clean agricultural land, within the framework of voluntary agri-environmental commitments. Eligible beneficiaries are very small, small and medium-sized enterprises operating in primary agricultural production, excluding problematic enterprises or those with pending recovery orders. The measure also aims to adapt to and mitigate climate change, through the restoration of vineyards with native varieties and other crops adapted to the climatic conditions of Cyprus. This initiative is a significant effort to strengthen agriculture, protect the environment and address the impacts of climate change in Cyprus, while also contributing to the preservation of agricultural traditions and cultural heritage.
