Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: Sampling Efforts and Farmer Reactions

Sampling, tracing, and laboratory tests for foot-and-mouth disease continue in Cyprus, with the number of cases remaining stable at 42. Culling has taken place in three areas (Livadia, Dromolaxia, Geri), and vaccination of cattle has reached 85+% island-wide, while goats and sheep are at 49.3%. The Advisory Committee, led by Mr. Malas, discussed the situation and set timelines for better coordination. During sampling, some farmers reacted, citing legislation requiring a wait for a second vaccination before sampling. Veterinary Services clarified that epidemiological investigations are necessary in infected areas to determine the extent of the problem. The tests conducted detect only antibodies from natural infection, not from vaccines, dispelling fears of misinterpreting the results. Legislation requires checking for the spread of the virus, and sampling is part of this process. Regarding harvesting in restricted areas, there is relevant guidance, and incidents of reactions in Geri were also reported. Authorities are seeking to prevent the spread of the virus and improve coordination between stakeholders.
