Cypriot Farmer Criticizes Minister's Response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

A farmer from Idalion, Charalambos Athanasiou, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the handling of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Cyprus. During the "Protoseleido" show, he accused the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, of offensive statements and of condemning farmers without basis. Mr. Athanasiou emphasized the delayed reaction of the authorities and the lack of adequate protection for farmers, as well as the serious economic and psychological impacts they are suffering. He pointed out that timely preventive measures were not taken, despite warnings from veterinarians, and that farmers are being left exposed. The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the occupied territories and the lack of effective control measures led to the spread of the disease and the interruption of meat and halloumi exports. The farmer also expressed concern about the lack of clarity regarding the support measures announced by the government, as well as the possibility of seizure of animals by the authorities. He stressed that the parties are negative about the freezing of farmers' loans, which further complicates the recovery of the sector. Finally, Mr. Athanasiou underlined the tragic psychological state of the farmers and the need for immediate and substantial support, both financial and psychological, to enable them to get back on their feet.
