Larnaca Held Hostage: Organized Crime Imposes 'Protection' with Government as Spectator

Larnaca is being held hostage by organized crime, with a series of attempted murders and vehicle arsons occurring in the past month. Authorities are concerned about the control that criminal groups are attempting to impose through the provision of 'protection' to businesses, with the phenomenon reaching explosive proportions. On Saturday, a clash involving axes, crowbars, and gunfire broke out on a central street in the city, just 100 meters from the Police Headquarters. The Police have made several arrests, but many cases remain open and the masterminds have not been identified. The focus of the investigation is on a group led by a 48-year-old Cypriot, who was arrested injured after Saturday's incident. The group allegedly demanded money from business owners for 'protection', threatening them in case of refusal. According to reports, the group approached a businessman and initially requested €7,000, increasing the amount to €1,000 per month. When the businessman refused to pay, he was attacked by the group, resulting in him retaliating with an axe and crowbar. During the clash, two shots were fired, fortunately without any injuries. This incident highlights the lack of effective state intervention and the inability of the authorities to tackle organized crime. The situation in Larnaca has reached a critical point, with the risk of escalating violence and threatening the safety of citizens. The need for immediate and decisive action is imperative to prevent further collapse of social cohesion and the rule of law in the city.
