Maduro Sends Message from Jail: 'We Are Well, We Are Fighters'

Nicolas Maduro, the ousted president of Venezuela, sent a message from the US jail where he is being held pending trial, assuring that both he and his wife, Cilia Flores, are in good condition. The message was relayed by his son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra – widely known as “Nicolásito” – to officials of the ruling PSUV party in Caracas. Maduro reportedly told his lawyers not to worry, while PSUV released a video with the message from his son. Maduro and Flores were arrested by US commandos at their home in Caracas, during the US military operation against Venezuela in the early hours of January 3rd. They were transferred to the United States and arraigned in a New York court, where they were charged with drug trafficking. According to the indictment, Maduro leads a corrupt and illegal government that has used state power for decades to protect and promote illegal activities, primarily drug trafficking, for personal and political gain. US authorities claim that Maduro colluded with “terrorist” insurgent movements and drug cartels to ship tons of cocaine to the US. These allegations suggest Maduro’s extensive and long-term involvement in illegal activities, reaching international levels. Alongside Maduro's arrest, Delcy Rodriguez, formerly the vice president, was sworn in as interim president of Venezuela. This development marks an attempt to establish political stability in the country following the arrests and subsequent crisis. Rodriguez is expected to face significant challenges in her effort to govern Venezuela.
