Maria Panagiotou Outlines Cypriot Presidency Priorities: Food Security and Green Transition

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, presents the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency for 2026, focusing on food security, water resilience, the green transition, and blue growth. Cyprus aims for a more resilient, autonomous, and competitive Europe, which will act as a 'bridge' of unity and remain close to its citizens. The Minister emphasized that the Cypriot Presidency seeks a European Union that is more resilient and self-sufficient, but also outward-looking on the international stage. The approach is based on cooperation with all institutions, as the challenges are common and require common solutions. The agricultural and fisheries sector falls under the pillar of autonomy through competitiveness. The Presidency's logo, inspired by Lefkara embroidery, symbolizes the harmony and unity of Europe. The colors, the orange of copper and the deep blue of the EU, highlight Cyprus' identity as an integral part of the European family. The Minister, with a personal connection to Lefkara, expressed her satisfaction that an element of Cypriot tradition is becoming a symbol of the entire Europe. In the agricultural sector, Cyprus aims for an agricultural policy that strengthens the competitiveness, sustainability, and long-term attractiveness of the primary sector. Promoting a fair, competitive, and sustainable primary sector is a key objective, especially in the current unstable geopolitical environment. Cyprus will focus on enhancing competitiveness, protecting the environment, and supporting farmers and fishermen.
