Air Safety Engineers Blame Outdated Systems for Athens FIR Blackout

The Union of Electronic Air Traffic Safety Engineers (ENHMAEK) issued a strong statement regarding the report of the Investigation Committee on the serious incident of January 4, 2026, in Greek airspace. ENHMAEK rejects the term “digital noise” as misleading and attributes the problem to outdated systems, staff shortages, and the chronic degradation of the Civil Aviation Authority. The Union emphasizes that its warnings to political and administrative leadership have been ignored for years, resulting in the safe operation of air navigation relying heavily on the professionalism of personnel, despite the lack of resources and organizational failures. It highlights the need for immediate modernization of systems and adequate staffing of the sector. The statement points out that the procurement of new systems without adequate personnel to support them is pointless. ENHMAEK had also expressed reservations about the new organizational structure of the CAA, predicting that the changes would burden the operation of the service. The incident of January 4, 2026, led to a significant restriction of air traffic, highlighting the criticality of the situation and the need for immediate addressing of the problems.
