The Christodoulides government is striving to showcase successes in foreign policy, however, accepting Donald Trump's invitation to participate in the Council for Peace in Gaza raises concerns. According to leaks, this Council aspires to function as a “mini UN,” with Trump holding lifelong presidential authority. Given Trump's well-known antipathy towards the UN and the international order, Cyprus's participation in this endeavor is considered risky, as the country bases its existence on UN resolutions. This move is expected to create problems within the European Union, as it undermines the effort for a unified foreign policy. Some member states may deviate from the common European line, leading to division and weakening of the EU. However, the government seems to view the invitation as a positive development, despite the potential negative consequences for the EU. The government desires to demonstrate achievements, but accepting Trump's invitation may be shortsighted. Cyprus must protect its position based on international law and the UN, and not participate in initiatives that undermine these institutions. Participation in an organization that operates in competition with the UN could lead to a degradation of Cyprus's international standing. Overall, the government is called upon to reconsider its stance and take into account the potential negative consequences of its participation in the Council for Peace in Gaza. Promoting national interests should not come at the expense of international legality and European unity.
