Minnesota: What Could Happen if Trump Invokes the Insurrection Act

Published January 16, 2026, 08:36

Former US President Donald Trump has openly threatened to invoke the “Insurrection Act” to deploy troops to Minnesota, in response to protests against federal immigration authorities. Trump has labelled the protesters “professional agitators” and Minnesota officials “corrupt”. The protests began following the death of Reneé Good, shot by an ICE officer. Legal experts consider invoking the Act an extreme and potentially illegal measure. The Act allows for the deployment of troops on US soil to suppress insurrection, even without the state’s consent, but its use is rare and controversial. In a separate trial for insurrection, prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Trump.
