Paphos Municipality Under Audit: Financial and Administrative Practices Scrutinized

Paphos Mayor Phaedon Phaedonos, currently suspended due to police investigations, is once again under scrutiny, this time by the Audit Office. Following a request from the Paphos municipal authorities, the Auditor General will conduct a comprehensive review of the municipality's financial and administrative issues over the past decade. The audit will focus on financial management, contracts, public works, and urban planning matters. Former Auditor General Odysseus Michaelides commented on the development, emphasizing that the Audit Office is obligated to investigate every complaint. He also revealed that he had already submitted a detailed letter to the police in 2023 outlining findings regarding financial and administrative issues within the Paphos Municipality, but had not received any updates on the outcome of the investigations. Furthermore, Mr. Michaelides referred to a special report issued in 2022 concerning the process of granting Turkish Cypriot commercial properties to the Paphos Municipality, noting that the mayor's response was attached to the report. The decision to audit by the Audit Office comes during a period of intense investigations into Mr. Phaedonos, as he faces serious allegations being investigated by the police. The audit is expected to shed light on potential irregularities and reveal the truth about the management of the Paphos Municipality in recent years.
