New Novel Explores Cypriot History and Personal Conflict

Nikos Nikolaou-Chatzimichail presents his new novel, "When the Birds Fell Silent," published by Karvas Editions in 2024. The book is set in Cyprus during the early years of British rule (1879-1922) and tells the story of a priest who comes into conflict with society and the Church due to his personal choices and love life. The author was inspired by family stories and testimonies, as well as research in archives of the time, such as the English-language newspaper The Owl, where he found references to a trial involving his ancestor. The novel attempts to reconstruct a story that has been scattered over time, shedding light on a dark and turbulent period in Cypriot history. The title of the book, "When the Birds Fell Silent," comes from a memory of the author's father, who described a moment of absolute silence and stillness after the arrival of British tanks in his village. This image symbolizes the oppression and loss of hope experienced by Cypriots during British rule. Nikolaou-Chatzimichail emphasizes that the period in which the story takes place has not been adequately explored by literature, making his book a unique addition to Cypriot literature. The work, according to him, is the best he has offered to Greek literature in Cyprus.
