Russian Diplomat's Death Raises Questions: Reportedly a GRU Officer

A Russian diplomat who died in Cyprus, Alexei Panov, is alleged to have been an officer of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, according to researcher Dmitry Khmelnitsky. Panov was the third secretary of the Russian embassy in Nicosia, and his death is attributed to suicide, however, questions arise regarding the circumstances and handling of the incident. The announcement of his death was delayed, Cypriot police were not allowed access to the embassy, and the deceased's note was not handed over to the authorities. Khmelnitsky claims that Panov worked in Moscow at an institute connected to radio technology and that in Cyprus he was responsible for maintaining espionage equipment. Furthermore, there are no confirmed links between the case and the disappearance of Vladislav Baumgertner.
