Admission of Failure, Insecurity and the Need for Real Action

The new Minister of Justice and Public Order, Konstantinos Fytiris, acknowledges the increase in crime and the insecurity of citizens, in contrast to his predecessor. During his visits to police headquarters, he pledged to engage in meaningful dialogue to identify operational problems and develop a feasible action plan. This plan will focus on crime prevention and enhancing the sense of security among citizens. Mr. Fytiris indirectly criticized his predecessor, implying that he failed to effectively address organized crime, which had spread throughout all provinces and operated even from within prisons. The Minister emphasized the need for a continuous and visible police presence on the streets and in neighborhoods, with increased patrols and targeted checks. At the same time, he highlighted the need for proper training of police officers, strict control, accountability and incentives for effective work. In addition, Mr. Fytiris proposed strengthening police officers on the front lines by transferring personnel from office positions to operational roles, as well as creating sufficient detention spaces. Finally, it was emphasized that the most important criterion in policing is the safety of the citizen and the restoration of trust in democracy.
