The Blue Sky of Romi Gonen and Anne Frank

Romi Gonen, 25, who was released from Hamas captivity in Gaza after 471 days, shared her harrowing experience of sexual abuse at the hands of Hamas members. Despite the terrible conditions, Romi described a moment of beauty and hope when she looked out a window and saw the blue sky and birds, realizing the difference between the barbarity she was experiencing and the freedom and beauty of the outside world. This experience was paralleled with the story of Anne Frank, who, while hiding from the Nazis, found solace in observing nature and the sky. Both women, in extreme circumstances, found strength and hope in the simplicity of nature, reminding us of the value of life and freedom. Their story is particularly poignant as we approach the end of the year.
