Breast Cancer on the Rise Globally – Need for Effective Interventions

A new study, the Global Burden of Disease 2023, reveals that breast cancer remains a significant cause of death and illness worldwide, with predictions for a further increase in cases in the coming decades. The study, published in The Lancet, shows that the burden of the disease is greater in lower-income countries, where mortality is higher despite the lower incidence. Early diagnosis and access to effective treatment appear to reduce deaths in countries with developed healthcare systems. In 2023, an estimated 2.30 million new cases and 764,000 deaths occurred worldwide, while the total burden of the disease was estimated at 24.1 million years of healthy life lost. The study highlights the need for effective interventions and addressing inequalities in access to healthcare.
