Heatwave Keeps Food Prices High

An analysis by the European Central Bank (ECB) shows that recent food inflation is mainly due to a few items, such as coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, confectionery and meat. The prices of cocoa and coffee have more than doubled since January 2024, due to extreme weather events, while meat prices are affected by reduced supply. The heatwave of summer 2025 is estimated to increase the prices of unprocessed food by 0.4 to 0.7 percentage points. The ECB expects food inflation to fall further, supported by a decline in price expectations. The dynamics of food prices significantly influence consumers' perceptions of inflation.
