Rifaat al-Assad, 'Butcher of Hama', Dies at 88

Rifaat al-Assad, the younger brother of the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, has died at the age of 88 in the United Arab Emirates. Known for his role in the suppression of the 1982 Hama uprising, in which over 10,000 people were killed, Rifaat al-Assad harbored presidential ambitions after his brother's death in 2000, but ultimately failed to seize power. He returned to Syria in 2021, but was forced to leave again in 2024. He had recently been indicted by Swiss authorities for war crimes and crimes against humanity related to his actions in Hama, with a trial scheduled for 2024. His actions in Hama are widely seen as a model for the suppression of protests by his nephew, Bashar al-Assad, during the Syrian civil war.
