Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spreads to Nicosia: First Case in Dali - Reports of a Case in Geri

The first case of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected on a farm in the Idalion livestock zone, in the province of Nicosia, putting the Veterinary Services on alert. This is a serious development, as the virus has now spread outside the initial surveillance zone in the province of Larnaca. The case was detected on a farm with young bulls, sheep and goats, owned by a well-known livestock trader. According to reports, a second case has also been detected on a cattle farm in the Geri area, near Idalion. This farm houses hundreds of cows. Livestock farmers in the area express strong concern about the situation, as the spread of the virus threatens livestock farming in the region. Following the detection of the cases, the Veterinary Services are expected to proceed with new animal culls, in accordance with the EU protocol, which provides for mass culls in each infected livestock unit. The situation is critical and requires immediate measures to limit the spread of the virus.
