Impact of Trump's New Tariffs – How Europe Will Respond

The new tariffs announced by Trump on imports from eight European countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Finland) are expected to have small effects on GDP, with Germany and the United Kingdom being the most affected. However, the political impact is expected to be significant, causing uncertainty and potentially leading to retaliation from the European Union. The tariffs will apply to €270 billion in exports to the US, about half of the EU's total exports to the country. Goldman Sachs estimates that the tariff increase will reduce the GDP of affected countries by 0.1-0.2%, with Germany taking the biggest hit. The impact on inflation is expected to be small, while the EU is considering various levels of retaliation.
