Defense Committee: Abolition of Quotas for Officer Promotions – MP Reactions

The House Defense Committee discussed the proposal by the GEFF and the Ministry of Defense to modify the evaluation and promotion system for National Guard Officers. The main provision of the proposal is the abolition of the quota for the score of Officers graduating from war colleges, such as ADISPO and SPSX. The proposed regulation aims to abolish the comparison of a graduate's performance with the score of the top student in the school, as averages and performance vary from year to year. It is argued that the evaluation should be based on the abilities of each officer and not on comparison with the top student. However, there are reactions. AKEL MP Kostas Kosta expressed disagreement, arguing that criteria should be added and not removed, as the abolition of the quota may create injustices. The Chairman of the Committee, Marinos Sizopoulos, argued that the performance of each officer should be evaluated based on their own abilities and score, as comparison with the top student is problematic due to the different conditions of each year. The need for this specific regulation dates back to 2019.
