Cyprus Prioritizes EU Engagement with the Middle East

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that bringing the European Union closer to the wider Middle East region is a key priority of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. During a meeting with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed AboulGheit, he emphasized the important role the Arab League can play in this effort. President Christodoulides mentioned that, following his proposal, the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission will travel to countries in the region, including Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. He also referred to the successful organization of the first EU-Egypt Summit and the promotion of strategic agreements with Lebanon and the Gulf countries. Mr. Christodoulides expressed confidence that cooperation with the Arab League will help address common challenges and leverage existing opportunities.
