Former Chief of the National Guard: Low Failure Rate of Defense Systems – "If We Are So Unlucky…" (VIDEO)

Former Chief of the National Guard, General Elias Leontaris, estimated that the tension in the Eastern Mediterranean will not de-escalate soon, emphasizing the need for constant readiness and strategic planning. In his analysis, he pointed out the lack of a clear plan to avoid war, expressing the view that the situation will remain tense at least until mid-April. Mr. Leontaris acknowledged the effective response of the Republic of Cyprus with the available resources, but stressed the long-standing deficit in air and naval power. While the "Andreas Papandreou" airbase is modern, the fleet remains inadequate due to previous political decisions. He emphasized the need for Cyprus's defense policy not to be influenced by potential Turkish reactions, stressing that Cyprus must protect its interests. Regarding the presence of foreign military forces on the island, General Leontaris assured that Cyprus is not a target, as their presence aims to prevent attacks on British bases. He expressed the view that Cyprus has effective air defense systems with a 95% accuracy rate, creating a strong shield of protection. Finally, referring to the threat from drones and missiles, Mr. Leontaris expressed confidence that Cyprus's defense systems are capable of dealing with such challenges. He reiterated that the success rate of the systems is very high and that the probability of failure is small, expressing optimism for the safety of the island.
