President Christodoulides: EU Needs to Take Initiative to End War

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that competitiveness and the situation in the Middle East are the two key issues that will be addressed at the Council Summit in Brussels, alongside developments in Ukraine. He emphasized the need for the European Union to take the initiative to end the war, as countries in the region are expecting such a move. President Christodoulides stated that the EU must play an active role in de-escalating the conflict and expressed optimism for results on the issue of competitiveness, as have been achieved in the field of defense and security. He also referred to support for Lebanon and the proposal of the President of Lebanon for talks with Israel, expressing Cyprus's willingness to contribute in this direction. Finally, he stressed the importance of strengthening the EU's mechanisms for the operational activation of Article 42(7) of the Treaty, if necessary.
