Cyprus Presidency Prioritizes Closer EU Ties with Middle East

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU prioritizes bringing the EU closer to the wider Middle East. In this context, he mentioned that the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission will visit countries in the region following his recommendation. President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of the Arab League in this effort and welcomed its Secretary-General, Ahmed AboulGheit. He noted that the Informal European Council in April will present specific projects to strengthen the EU's engagement in the region. Significant steps have already been taken, such as the first EU-Egypt Summit and the first high-level EU-Jordan Council. At the same time, discussions are underway for a strategic agreement with Lebanon and more broadly with the Gulf countries. President Christodoulides expressed confidence that the EU and the Middle East have common challenges and prospects if they cooperate. The Presidency's goal is to strengthen the EU's relations with the region, both during its term and after. Cyprus seeks to play a catalytic role in bridging the two sides and promoting stability and prosperity in the wider region.
