President to Meet MI6 Chief - "Security Consultations"

President Nikos Christodoulides will meet with the head of the British foreign intelligence service (MI6), Blaise Metreweli, at the Presidential Palace on Friday. The meeting comes amid rising regional tensions and increased military activity in the eastern Mediterranean, related to the US-Israel-Iran conflict. Metreweli’s visit follows a series of diplomatic and defense contacts between Cyprus and its partners, following recent incidents related to British sovereign base areas. British Defense Secretary John Healey met earlier with Vasilis Palmas, reaffirming the close friendship between the two countries and strengthening British air defense. Both sides exchanged views on the security situation in the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean, and reaffirmed their common intention to enhance cooperation in crisis management. The discussion followed an incident involving a drone that hit the runway at RAF Akrotiri, one of the British bases in Cyprus. Nicosia expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived limited briefing from London regarding the regional security situation. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer clarified that bases in Cyprus are not used by US bombers. Furthermore, Britain has deployed the warship HMS Dragon and AW159 Wildcat helicopters to Cyprus, as a sign of commitment to the security of the island and British personnel. F-35 fighter jets stationed in Cyprus have already participated in operations in the region, intercepting and shooting down drones in Jordanian airspace.
