President: British Bases in Cyprus are a "Colonial Relic"

President Nikos Christodoulides described the British bases in Cyprus as a "colonial relic", calling for a discussion about their status after the end of the conflict in the Middle East. The statement was made at an event in Brussels, where the President emphasized that this discussion should be held with the British government. At the same time, President Christodoulides acknowledged that there is also the dimension of the 10,000 Cypriots who reside in the bases, towards whom the Republic of Cyprus has obligations. However, he stressed that the level of cooperation between Cyprus and the United Kingdom is "extremely positive", referring to the recent visit of the British Prime Minister to the island. The President's statements contrast with the view of the British Undersecretary of Defense, who stated that the future of the bases "is not in question". However, concern about the bases has increased in Cyprus, especially after the recent drone strike by an Iranian-made drone on the Akrotiri base. Opposition to the existence of the bases is bicommunal, with AKEL and the Turkish Cypriot party CTP calling for their abolition. Even former British Prime Ministers have acknowledged that Cyprus is a target due to the presence of the bases, while the Cypriot Foreign Minister has warned that the bases could become a target in the event of a conflict in the region.
