President Discusses New EU Multiannual Financial Framework with European Court of Auditors President

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, discussed the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) with the President of the European Court of Auditors, Tony Murphy, and its Member, Lefteris Christoforou. President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of the proposed budget for the period 2028-2034, describing it as a “huge challenge.” He expressed optimism that consensus would be reached, noting the need to complete the process by the end of the year, as agreed with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission. The new MFF must respond to the current challenges facing the EU. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus has received over €4 billion from the EU for projects that benefit all its citizens. Regarding the Common Agricultural Policy, he stressed the need to find a balance. The President of the European Court of Auditors, Tony Murphy, described the meeting as “very productive” and noted that Cyprus has a high rate of absorption of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, having absorbed 46% of the approximately €1 billion allocated to the country. He expressed hope that negotiations on the MFF would progress during the Cypriot Presidency.
