Protecting Stray Animals from the Winter Cold

As winter arrives and temperatures drop, stray animals face significant survival challenges. Without shelter from the cold, humidity, and hunger, they are at risk of hypothermia. However, there are several ways citizens can help. They can offer temporary shelter in garages or building entrances, ensuring separation from pets and the animal's health. Alternatively, they can create warm and waterproof shelters outdoors, using ready-made houses or improvised constructions with insulation and blankets. Furthermore, it is important to check your car before starting, especially on cold nights, as cats often seek refuge in the engine. Providing food with high caloric value, such as calorie-rich foods or with the addition of tuna or salmon, can help strays maintain their body temperature. However, the food should be consumed immediately to prevent freezing. Finally, we must not forget the need for water. In freezing conditions, water easily freezes, so it is essential to check bowls frequently and fill them with clean, fresh – preferably lukewarm – water, so that animals remain hydrated. Even a small effort from everyone can make a big difference in the lives of stray animals during the winter.
