Foot-and-Mouth Disease Warning: Virus Mutation Could Lead to Human Transmission

Epidemiologist Dr. Michalis Voniatis warns that foot-and-mouth disease could be transmitted to humans if the virus mutates, as our biological profile is close to that of pigs. He expressed concern about the situation in the occupied territories, where infected animals are not being culled, which does not eliminate the virus. He stressed the need to apply the strict rules of the European Union to keep Cyprus in the single market. Mr. Voniatis stated that the measures being taken are not arbitrary, but are based on the categories of the virus and aim to eliminate it from livestock farms. He explained that the virus currently does not affect humans, but a mutation could change that. Drawing a parallel to bird flu, he mentioned that the virus jumps from birds to pigs and from there to humans. The lack of culling of infected animals in the occupied territories poses a significant risk, as it allows the virus to continue circulating. Mr. Voniatis emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus must strictly implement measures to protect the health of citizens and the country's economy. He stressed that there is always the possibility of a virus mutation and its transmission to humans, although no one can predict whether such a mutation would be more dangerous. Proactive measures are necessary to avoid a potential epidemic and protect public health.
