Broken Rail Link Found as Cause of Spanish Train Derailment

A broken rail link appears to be the cause of the high-speed train derailment in Spain on Sunday, which claimed the lives of at least 39 people. According to a source informed about the initial findings of the investigation, the damage to the link (fishplate) had been present for some time. The broken link had created a gap between the rail sections, which widened with each passing train. The damage was identified by technicians conducting an on-site inspection. The accident occurred near the town of Adamuz, in the province of Cordoba. The derailed carriages collided with a passing train traveling in the opposite direction. The Spanish Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) has taken over the investigation, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez canceled his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos after the tragic incident.
