Cran Montana Fire: Owner Narrowed Staircase, Creating Deadly Trap

The deadly fire in Cran Montana, Switzerland, was caused by fireworks and resulted in the deaths of 40 people. The tragedy was exacerbated by the illegal renovation of the staircase at Le Constellation bar, which had been narrowed from 3 meters to 1 meter. The bar owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, have been arrested and are charged with negligent homicide, causing bodily harm, and negligent arson. Jacques Moretti admitted to reducing the width of the staircase, which authorities say played a crucial role in the disaster. 34 of the 40 victims were trapped in the narrow staircase and died of asphyxiation. Jacques' wife, Jessica, allegedly left the bar shortly before the fire, taking the cash register with her.
