Supermarket Basket Costs 30% More in Greece Over 20 Years

The value of the consumer goods basket in Greek supermarkets has increased by 30% over the past two decades, despite the volume of sales remaining stable. Greece and Italy are the only EU countries where real household income has decreased during the same period. The market, although not significantly expanded, has grown mainly due to price increases, with the economic crisis and the 2016 referendum causing the largest declines in volume and turnover. The 2020 pandemic led to an increase in sales volume, but inflationary pressures in 2022 and 2023 caused a decrease in volumes. 2025 shows a more balanced picture, with increases in both sales value and volume, indicating a return to actual consumption. However, the uncertainty caused by the war in the Middle East is creating anxiety among consumers, with 72% stating they have already changed their consumption habits.
