Bill to Regulate Land Sales to Foreigners to be Discussed in Parliament

Parliament will discuss on April 2nd a bill proposed by AKEL MP Stefanos Stefanou to regulate the sale of land to foreigners. The bill aims to abolish provisions allowing indirect acquisition of property by foreigners without permission and to introduce control mechanisms. The proposal prohibits the purchase of forest and agricultural land by foreigners, as well as the acquisition of properties near the ceasefire line or critical infrastructure. In addition, it sets conditions for the acquisition of land by foreigners with a specific area. According to the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, Aristos Damianou, a large percentage of Cypriot land is not in the hands of Cypriots and the bill is expected to be passed by a large majority.
