The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is in Cyprus accompanied by the College of Commissioners, on a visit of high symbolic and political importance. At the center of the discussions are European-Cypriot relations and developments in the Cyprus issue. President von der Leyen visited old Nicosia and Ledin Street, on the 'Green Line', where she was briefed on the significance of the area and potential new crossings. The visit was highly symbolic, highlighting the coexistence of cultures and religions in the heart of the divided city. The College of Commissioners will work at the port of Limassol, where an exhibition has been set up dedicated to the 'Amalthea' initiative to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, an initiative of the Republic of Cyprus with the support of the EU. A joint press conference between President Christodoulides and the President of the Commission is scheduled. The visit takes place at a critical juncture for the Cyprus issue, with intensified efforts at the United Nations to restart the negotiation process.
