Cyprus Has the Fifth Lowest Share of Renewable Energy in the EU

According to Eurostat data, Cyprus ranks among the five lowest in the European Union regarding the contribution of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) to electricity. In 2024, RES accounted for only 24% of Cyprus's net electricity production, compared to the EU average of 47.5%. At the EU level, the share of RES in electricity has nearly tripled since 2004, increasing energy independence and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Wind and hydropower are the main sources of RES in the EU, followed by solar energy, which is experiencing the fastest growth. The countries with the highest share of RES in electricity are Austria (90.1%), Sweden (88.1%), and Denmark (79.7%). Conversely, Malta (10.7%) and the Czech Republic (17.9%) are among the lowest. Cyprus, along with Hungary, occupies the fifth lowest position with 24.1%. These figures highlight the need for further investment and policies to promote the development of RES in Cyprus, in order to achieve European goals for climate change and energy transition.
