EU-Mercosur Deal Under Scrutiny: Implications for Cypriot Farmers

The EU-Mercosur trade agreement is at the center of an emergency meeting of the parliamentary committee on Agriculture. The agreement, which was approved by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), aims to strengthen trade between the EU and Latin American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia). The agreement eliminates tariffs on 91% of products and is expected to benefit Cyprus, which exports 1/5 of its products. Specifically, it is expected to reduce the cost of animal feed and open new markets for Cypriot agricultural products. The Cypriot Presidency of the EU played a crucial role in the negotiations.
