Phytiris-Viras Meeting to Strengthen Police: 'People are Fed Up'

Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Phytiris, met in Larnaca with Mayor Andreas Viras and the local Police leadership following a recent criminal incident. The Minister emphasized the need for cooperation between the state, municipalities, and civil society to address the rise in organized crime, announcing the strengthening of police presence and patrols in critical areas. Mayor Viras agreed with the need for cooperation, offering the municipality's assistance through information and joint campaigns, but clarified that tackling organized crime is not the responsibility of local authorities. He expressed concern about the insecurity caused by such incidents and called for a specific action plan from the state. The Larnaca Police Director, Ioannis Kapnoulas, stated that police officers volunteered to work outside of their regular hours to support the police force. Investigations into the recent incident are ongoing, and patrols have been increased to minimize the presence of officers within the station. Both sides acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and the need for immediate and effective action. Minister Phytiris described the effort as a 'battle' and stressed that everyone will be judged by the results, while Mayor Viras expressed the public's frustration with endless promises without corresponding actions.
