Bicommunal Veterinary Committee Discusses Foot-and-Mouth Disease Situation

The Bicommunal Veterinary Committee convened to receive updates on the foot-and-mouth disease situation. The meeting was held at the request of the Greek Cypriot side and is the fourth since the first case was detected in the Turkish-held areas. Committee members are in constant communication. Veterinarians from the Republic of Cyprus provided information on the situation in the free areas, including two new cases on farms in Dali and Geri. The Turkish Cypriot side reported that the disease has been contained in the Lapathou area and vaccination continues. The Greek Cypriot side proposed the adoption of uniform protocols with the European Union on both sides, however, the Turkish Cypriot side requested time to study it. Mass culling of animals has not been carried out in the Turkish-held areas, except in severe cases. The Committee followed a similar policy of uniformity during the coronavirus pandemic. The Turkish Cypriot side will respond after studying the proposal.
