IMO to Hold Emergency Meeting on Shipping Situation in Middle East

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will hold an emergency session to discuss the shipping situation in the Middle East, as fears grow for the safety of thousands of ships and sailors. The session will consider the possible adoption of resolutions, including the creation of a safe maritime corridor for the removal of stranded ships in the Persian Gulf. However, the resolutions are not binding. The meeting is taking place amid an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has sent oil prices soaring and left around 20,000 sailors stranded. Over 20 ships have been attacked or targeted. Various countries are calling on the IMO to condemn Iranian attacks and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran attributes the situation to attacks by Israel and the United States.
