Emergency Cabinet Meeting After Vassiliou's Death

The Cypriot Cabinet will convene in an emergency session today, January 14th, at 4:00 PM, under the presidency of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides. The emergency meeting was called following the death of former President George Vassiliou, in order to make decisions regarding his funeral and the honors to be bestowed. George Vassiliou served as the third President of the Republic of Cyprus, elected in 1988 as an independent candidate with the support of AKEL and other independent figures. During his presidency, he made significant efforts to find a just solution to the Cyprus problem. President Christodoulides expressed his sorrow over the death of George Vassiliou, emphasizing that the deceased “expanded the international footprint of our country.” The political world of Cyprus bids farewell to Vassiliou as a realist and reformer, who shaped the European perspective of Cyprus. The funeral of George Vassiliou is expected to take place with particular solemnity, as he was a significant figure in the history of Cyprus. The decisions of the Cabinet will determine the protocol and details of the ceremony.
