Pensioners in Greece Struggle with 'Hunger Pensions'

The Secretary-General of the Greek Pensioners' Confederation (EKYSY), Evtychios Papamichail, has denounced the low level of pensions received by many retirees, describing them as 'hunger pensions'. The average pension is around €469.77, an amount insufficient for a decent life given the high cost of living. Despite recent small increases, many pensions remain below the poverty line, with the full basic pension amounting to €529.82 and the minimum to €450.35. Mr. Papamichail stressed the need for substantial pension increases, aiming for amounts exceeding €1000, emphasizing that current and future pensioners deserve a dignified standard of living. He rejected the idea of providing allowances or small checks, highlighting the need for pensions that are satisfactory and cover basic needs. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, but pointed out that resolving it requires a stable economy. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between all stakeholders to find sustainable solutions. Consultations on pension issues are expected in the coming days, as well as on other important matters such as survivor pensions and the state's debt to social security. The government is committed to carefully considering all proposals and making the necessary decisions to improve the lives of pensioners.
