Paroutis: Protecting Cyprus's 'Livestock Starter' is Crucial

Sotiris Paroutis commented on OMEGA Channel on the critical situation in the Cypriot livestock sector due to foot-and-mouth disease. He stressed that the problem is serious and threatens the entire sector, pointing out that the virus is spreading despite the measures taken. Crisis management must be done with stricter adherence to protocols, even with further animal culling. Mr. Paroutis referred to the peculiarity of the occupied territories, where the lack of measures and the continued import of animals from Turkey create a risk of re-infection. For this reason, he emphasized the need for unified management of the problem throughout the island, possibly with the assistance of the European Union. Regarding the reconstruction of the livestock sector, Mr. Paroutis stressed the importance of preserving the genetic material of native breeds of sheep and goats, which are adapted to the conditions of Cyprus. The priority should be to protect these breeds, while for cattle, which are imported breeds, the approach may be different. Finally, Mr. Paroutis mentioned that ensuring the safety of animal and dairy products circulating in the market is of utmost importance. Effective crisis management requires political decisions and potentially economic costs, but is essential to protect the livestock sector and the Cypriot economy.
