Shelters for Short-Term Use - No Pets Allowed

The Commander of Civil Defence, Maria Pappa, answered questions regarding the readiness of shelters and population information systems on the show “Midday and Something”. It was clarified that shelters are intended for short-term use and not for long-term accommodation. Civil Defence is recording and utilising additional spaces, especially in communities with limited infrastructure, and is collaborating with community leaders to identify underground spaces. Despite difficulties in rural areas, efforts are being made to find additional options, such as in the Akkiu community. Ms. Pappa emphasised that shelters are not the only solution for protection, as Civil Defence provides alternative instructions and options to citizens. The situation of certain shelters located on private properties is being addressed through on-site visits to owners to inform them of their obligations in the event of an alarm. Regarding the “SaveCY” application, technical weaknesses, such as incorrect shelter locations, have been acknowledged, and efforts are being made to improve it in collaboration with the platform’s development organisation. On-site visits also aim to verify shelter details to update the application. Furthermore, finding new shelters is difficult due to the lack of basements in new buildings. For this reason, a review of the legislation is underway to create new protective spaces and provide incentives for citizens to create them.
