Behind the Russian Attack on Patriarch Bartholomew: The Story of a 'Holy War'

Relations between the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Russian Orthodox Church have reached a critical point following a fierce attack by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) on Patriarch Bartholomew. Russia accuses the Patriarch of being an agent of British intelligence and seeking to destroy the Russian Orthodox Church by detaching churches from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. He is also accused of planning to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Montenegro in order to weaken the Serbian Orthodox Church. Russia frames the situation as a "holy war," while Patriarch Bartholomew had warned of Russian intentions as early as 2016.
