Fisheries Department: Procedures for Injured and Dead Sea Turtles

The Fisheries and Marine Research Department (FMRD) issued a statement regarding the management of injured or dead sea turtles, following a recent case of mistreatment in Chloraka. The FMRD recalls issuing annual guidelines and protocols for such cases, and emphasizes its cooperation with local authorities, such as the Chloraka Community Council, which responded promptly to the incident. The handling of the turtle in the video is condemned as unacceptable. The announcement details the procedures to be followed: injured/sick turtles are transported by FMRD staff or authorized bodies for care at the Marine Turtle Rescue Center operating at the Cyprus Marine Culture Research Centre (CMC) in Meneou. For dead turtles, the responsibility for burial/collection/cremation lies with the local authorities (Municipalities/Communities). The FMRD notes that it collects some dead turtles for further analysis, such as stomach content checks and DNA analysis. The public is urged to contact the FMRD or the service lines in each region (Nicosia, Larnaca, Famagusta, Limassol, Paphos) to report injured or dead turtles. Furthermore, the public can send information such as shell dimensions and photos for recording in the FMRD database.
