Turkey Criticizes Greek Statements on Patriot Missiles and Cyprus

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described as “unfortunate” and “untimely” statements from Greek circles regarding the deployment of Patriot missile systems to Karpathos and the sending of reinforcements to Cyprus, accusing them of attempting to poison Turkey-Greece relations. Turkey reiterates that the Aegean islands are subject to a demilitarized regime under the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris. Furthermore, the Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized the reference to Cyprus, arguing that Turkish Cypriots are capable of ensuring their own security with the support of Turkey and do not need protection from others. It concludes by calling on Greece to show common sense and avoid baseless claims.
