Three-Hour Strike at EAC Amidst Criticism of Lack of State Planning

Employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) have announced a three-hour strike today, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, protesting the serious problems facing the electricity sector. In a letter to the EAC Board of Directors, trade unions denounce the lack of state planning and the delays of the competent authorities, which are worsening the situation and having negative consequences for consumers and the economy. Employees point out that, despite meetings with the Board of Directors, where there was agreement on the need to solve the problems, these remain unresolved. Furthermore, they accuse the government of dealing with “imaginative and unfounded proposals” that increase the cost of electricity, instead of focusing on real solutions to ensure adequacy, security of supply and support for consumers. The strike is an escalation of the employees' protest, who demand immediate action to address the problems and implement a comprehensive plan for the energy sector. The EAC faces significant challenges, such as the need to upgrade infrastructure, adapt to new technologies and address the effects of climate change. The government has not yet officially commented on the strike, but is expected to consider the demands of the employees and try to find a solution that satisfies all parties.
